A Beautiful Sunset

Pirates for a Day

On Sunday, we all dressed up and attended the Family Pirate Fun Day for Military families. It was held in Halifax at the Waterfront Warehouse Restaraunt. The event was free and included lunch, door prizes, scavenger hunt and a costume contest. The food was excellent and we had a huge buffet of burgers, hot dogs, nachos, chicken fingers and fries, mussels, veggies and desserts to choose from.
We were quite surprised when they called our names for the costume contest. We won a 2 night stay complete with breakfast each morning at the Westin Nova Scotian. It's a beautiful hotel in downtown Halifax near Pier 21. We're thinking of using our gift certificate for New Year's Eve. I can't wait for 2 whole days of not having to cook or clean!! LOL!

Taste of Nova Scotia

Halifax is a major port of call for cruise ships. We see many cruise ships docked in Halifax throughout the year. One of the best sites however is when the Queen Mary 2 pulls into port. She's a beautiful ship owned by the Cunard Cruise Lines. Here's some interesting facts about her:

The QM2 is more than twice as long as the Washington Monument is tall

Remembrance Day/ Veteran's Day

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Okay, so we just got back from the movie theater. Guy, my sister and I took the girls to see Beverly Hills Chihuahua. We laughed, we cried and it was such a cute movie. Being an owner of two chihuahua's myself, this movie was even funnier. I could so see Gidget and Sassie dressed up in some fine Beverly Hills clothes! LOL! Anyway, I would recommend that if anyone is looking for a really cute Disney movie to see, go check it out. You won't be disappointed!

Oh my gosh, I can't believe that I have let this blog go since April. Where has the time gone??? Okay, after smacking myself, I am going to make sure I get better at updating this thing.

Where to start... let's see. I guess that I will start off with work. I am now working full time at the Casual Care in Shearwater. I'm loving it and I really enjoy being with the kids. I truly think that I've found my calling. I am still playing with the idea of going back to school to get my ECE degree. We'll see where that goes...I'm also taking a bunch of classes and workshops for work. I completed the facilitators course and now have my facilitators certificate. I run the gymboree programs at both the Halifax and Shearwater sites now.

I've also started going to the gym three to five times a week. I've become quite addicted to it I guess you could say. I'll spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours there each time and I have already lost 10 pounds since August. So, I am quite proud of myself. My first goal is to get a sexy black dress for my Christmas party. I'll keep you all updated!

Katie started school earlier this month. I walked her to the bus stop on the first day and I admit, I was a little teary eyed! She was so excited though and was the first one on the bus! She's really enjoying it and I guess that it's time for me to let go of my baby!

Haley is in grade 6 this year. Where does the time go? I can't believe my little blue eyed girl in 11 years old already. Man, do I feel old! LOL! She's started in the school band this year as well. She's taking after her mom and aunt and playing the clairinet. After a month, she's already playing "hot cross buns." I can see a future member of the marching band in the making!

Both girls played soccer this year. Haley played in the competitive league this year and had two games a week plus a weekly practice. Katie played for the Tim Horton's timbits again and had two games a week as well. Yeah, we were running all over town four days a week for soccer. But, at least they enjoyed it and got some fresh air and exercise.

Guy's enjoying his job and has been really busy lately. They are short staffed, so he has many hectic days on the job. He's excited though because Hockey starts next month.

Well, I think I've got everything caught up now, so now I am back on track. Take care and have a great day!

A Taste of Nova Scotia-- Feathered Friends Style

I have all kinds of bird feeders hung up in my backyard. I just love to sit and watch the birds come in for a snack. We get some beautiful Blue Jays, Chickadees, Robins, and even Woodpeckers that come for a visit. My husband and I were lucky enough to get some great shots and I thought I would share them with everyone.

I am so sorry that it's been so long since I've updated! I have been so busy with work lately, that the time just flies by and I don't know where it has gone. My hubby has been on course in Borden, Ontario since the beginning of March and won't be back until the end of April, so things have been pretty hectic around here!

Recipe Sunday...

Ribbons & Bows Dinner
Serves: 6

Ingredients:
4 1/2 cups uncooked bow tie pasta
2 pork tenderloins (1 1/2 lbs.) cut into 2" strips
3 Tbsp. olive oil, divided
2 cups fresh broccoli florets
2 cups fresh cauliflower florets
1 jar (17 oz.) alfredo sauce
2 1/2 tsp. dried basil
3/4 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

Directions:
1. Cook pasta according to directions.
2. Meanwhile, cook pork in 1 Tbsp. oil over medium heat until no longer pink; remove and keep warm. In same pan, saute broccoli and cauliflower in remaining oil until crisp-tender.
3. Drain pasta; stir into skillet. Add alfredo sauce, pork, basil, garlic salt and pepper. Cook and stir until heated through.

Lunar Eclipse

The other night we were fortunate enough to have clear skies as the lunar eclipse took place. It's not too congested where we live, and not many city lights around, so we were able to stand right on our deck in the back yard and watch the eclipse. It was really cool, especially with all of the stars in the background. The moon turned a beautiful orange color when we were out and Guy was fortunate enough to get some great pictures of the lunar eclipse.

Fresh Paint

Since we've moved into our PMQ, I have been going crazy over the white walls in our house. I am so tired of looking at plain old white! I feel like I am in a sterile hospital or something. Anyway, I love green, especially Sage Green, so I went to WalMart and picked out a beautiful green called "Morning Haze" and decided to paint the dining room. It's finally done, and I absolutely love it! My next job is to start painting my living room...I'm going to go for a nice tan color I think. Stay tuned for pictures once I am done.

New! Recipe Sunday...

Well, as part of my plan of posting to my blog at least twice a week, I've come up with "Recipe Sunday." Every Sunday I will be posting a new recipe up for everyone to enjoy. So, here goes...

Hot Buttered Rum
serves: 8

Ingredients:
2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 quarts hot water
2 cups spiced rum, such as Morgan's
1 cup whipped cream, for garnish
Nutmeg, for garnish

Directions:
1. Combine brown sugar, butter and hot water in a crockpot. Cover and cook on LOW for 5 hours.
2. Stir in Rum.
3. Divide mixture between 8 mugs. Top with a dollop of whipped cream and a dash of nutmeg. Enjoy!

Well, as you can see, I've given my blog an all new look. With that, I thought I would change a few things around as well...such as every Wednesday will now be "A Taste of Nova Scotia" picture posting. (This will also give me a reason to make I sure I update my blog more regulary!)

Anyway, here is the first picture...THis is a picture of Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. It is a beautiful fishing village about 45 minutes from where we live. I absolutely love to drive out there. Not only is it a beautiful drive, but they have the cutest little shops to spend the day in!

Well, I will be off for a while...we are going to Michigan for the holidays to be with my family. Yippee!! Can you tell that I am excited? Our plane leaves tomorrow morning at 6:30....only 13 hours to go!

I couldn't resist sharing this photo with everyone. These are my 2 dogs, Sassy and Gidget. They don't normally help themselves up to the table, but for some reason thought that they should give it a try this time. (Must have been the smell of our chicken dinner! LOL). Anyway, they stayed long enough for me to get this picture.
Sassy is 8 years old and Gidget will be 11 years old in January.

A beautiful Bluejay

I recently hung up some bird feeders in my backyard...the girls really like to watch the birds fly by. We've had tons of beautiful bluejays and chickadees visit the feeders. We've even had a woodpecker stop by. The girls get so excited each time a bird lands on the feeders and start pecking away at the food.
I just find it so relaxing to look out my window and watch the birds. I was lucky enough to get some great pictures of them too. Enjoy!

Happy Trick-or-Treat!!

The girls had an excellent time trick-or-treating tonight. Haley dressed up as a Renaissance Princess and Katie was Ragedy Ann. They looked so cute! We were out for about an hour-and-a half tonight. They came home with a huge bag of treats (lots for all of us to share! LOL!)

Well, tonight I carved the girls pumpkins...which seems to be my job every year.(Not that I mind, I always get compliments, which makes me happy). They picked out 3 pumpkins this year...So, I carved out a spider, a pirate and a cat sitting on the moon. The girls were quite pleased with them.

Halloween Party

Haley's school hosted a "Halloween Howl" for the entire family. They had a cake walk, games, and a 50/50 draw, which I won! Whoo hoo! I won $70.50! Katie was quite pleased with herself as well...she won 2, yes 2! cakes at the cake walk.

Anyway, the girls dressed up as Mickey Mouse and Pocahontas...they looked so cute! They had a great time too.

A head start on Christmas....

I decided that I would start early on my Christmas gifts this year. After seeing a really awesome idea on Splitcoast Stampers for stamping on tiles, I thought I'd give it a try. I found this beautiful cardinal stamp at Michaels and used a flaming red and black staz on ink pads. Then I colored them in and sprayed them with sealant. Next I added little felt pads on the back and.... voila! My first attempt at stamping on tiles... Not to bad, if I do say so myself..I am quite happy with them. I will be wrapping a bit of pretty ribbon around sets of 4 and giving them to Katie's preschool teachers and Haley's teacher for Christmas gifts. Hopefully they will enjoy them! Now...to think of some other ideas! These were so easy and soooo much fun! LOL.

Our New House

Well, we are pretty much moved into our new house in Shearwater. We are all loving it here. We have a HUGE house...about 2000 sq. feet. We have 3 bedrooms, 1 1/2 baths, living room, dining room, large kitchen and the basement. The best part is...we have a beautiful fireplace in the living room. We live on a one-way street, so the girls can ride their bikes safely. There is a park right across the street and the girls love being able to go play there.

My new job

I applied for the Casual Childcare position at our MFRC last week. Today I received a phone call saying that I got the job. I start tomorrow! It will be fun working with the kids again....I really enjoy it. Katie gets to go to work with me too, because she only has preschool on Monday, Wednesday and Friday's.

The girls were so happy when their prizes arrived in the mail on Friday for their sandcastle contest. They each received a Roots/ Chronicle Herald backpack and they also got 5 Empire Theater movie passes. You can tell how happy they were by the picture. THanks again for everyone who voted for them.

Key West Chicken Marinade

I recently came across this recipe on the internet and gave it a try. I think that this is my family's favorite new way to fix chicken. Just marinate your chicken and then toss it on the BBQ...very tasty!

Ingredients:
3 Tbsp. Soy Sauce
1 Tbsp. Honey
1 Tbsp. Vegetable Oil
1 tsp. Lime Juice (key lime if you can find it)
1 tsp. Chopped Garlic
4 Chicken Breasts, or 1 lb. chicken pieces

Directions:
1. Blend together marinade ingredients. Place chicken pieces into a large ziploc bag and pour marinade over it. Seal bag and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight.
2. BBQ chicken as usual. Enjoy!

Serves: 4

I thought that maybe it was about time that I put a picture of my 2 beautiful girls on here! My oldest, Haley is 10 and she's going to be in 5th grade starting September 5. Man, where does the time go? It feels like yesterday when she was sitting in a high chair and eating cheerios! LOL.

My youngest is Katie and she's 4. Oh, where do I start with her! She is soooo independent and I don't think that I'll ever have to worry about her. If she doesn't like something, she lets you know. LOL! Anyway, she's starting preschool on September 17th. She is really excited about that. (What will I do with 3 mornings a week to myself??? Hmmm...maybe I can get some cards made!)

Quick Pumpkin Pudding

I love pumpkin pie, but it's just too long to wait for Thanksgiving to have a slice! This is a quick, easy substitute that you can have any time of the year.

Ingredients:
1 pkg. instant vanilla pudding mix
1 can (12 oz.) 2% evaporated milk
1 can (15 oz.) Libby's 100% pure pumpkin
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
Cool Whip, thawed

Directions:
1. Beat pudding mix and evaporated milk according to package directions in a large bowl; refrigerate for 5 minutes.
2. Add pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice; mix well. Spoon into dessert dishes. Refrigerate at least 10 minutes or until ready to serve.
3. Top with Cool Whip before serving.

Girl's Night at the Movies...

I won a double pass to the Halifax premier of "Becoming Jane" from the Halifax Daily News. I asked my friend Julie to go with me for a "girls night out." She picked me up and we went to the theater in Halifax. We parked and had a short walk to the theater. The weather was gorgeous, so the walk was great.

Once in the theater, we bought some popcorn, with butter of course, and headed into the theater. We were both surprised to find the theater was almost packed...we had to sit in the front row. Although we suffered stiff necks (LOL) the movie was really good. It was a great love story. It was about Jane Austin, the author of "Pride & Prejudice." Besides, we all need one of those once in a while, don't we? It's nice to take a break from all the action movies.

Potato Candy

This is an old fashioned candy... I know, sounds really weird, but it is sooooo good! Let me know what you think...I'd be curious to see what everyone thinks of it!

Ingredients:
1 medium potato, peeled and boiled
1 cup flaked coconut
4 cups powdered sugar (icing sugar)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 square bittersweet chocolate

Directions:
1. Mash potato with fork. Stir in coconut.
2. Add powdered sugar and vanilla; mix well. Press into a buttered 8" or 9" square pan.
3. Melt chocolate over hot water. Drizzle over candy. Allow to set, cut into squares.

Makes: 25 pieces

A great find at Costco!!

I just had to share with everyone my new toys! My husband and I went to Costco and I decided to look at the "crafty" isle and look what I found! This is a set of 40, yes 40 punches in a neat little zippered case... Bet you can't guess how much I paid for it either.... would you believe $19.99? Gotta love Costco! I brought them home and had to try them out right away. These will be great for my cardmaking and even when I do crafts with the girls!

This is a card that my sister and I came up with during our "power card making" session. She had some beautiful colors of paper and this ink pad in sage....I think it is my favorite color now and it goes really well with the pink and brown. The ribbon finishes the look.

Back from vacation

Sorry it's been so long since I've posted anything on here, but I have been so busy! The girls and I just got back from Michigan. We flew over to visit my parents and sister. I hadn't seen them in nine months and we were all homesick! The girls had a great time with their grandparents and Aunt Lori! I ended up twice at the emergency room with my asthma though! Not a good thing, especially when I am supposed to be enjoying my visit with my family! ANyway, I am feeling better and I'm ready to get back into keeping up my blog! I thought that I would post pics of a few cards that my sister and I made.... we had a card making day and boy was it fun!!! We each made about 8 cards and I got to play with all her cool stuff...It's fun having a chance to play with other people's cardmaking goodies! Sometimes I get bored with my own. HAHAHA.

Pineapple Angel Food Cake

Ingredients:
1 box angel food cake mix
1 can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple, undrained
1 tub fat free cool whip, thawed

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350F. Spray a 9x13 pan with Pam.
2. Combine cake mix and undrained pineapple. Mix well and pour into pan.
3. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
4. Serve with a dollop of Cool Whip.

My hubby's favorite peanut butter cookies

Here's a really easy and tasty recipe for peanut butter cookies:

Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 egg

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350F.
2. Cream together egg and sugar. Stir in peanut butter.
3. Drop dough by tablespoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake for 8 - 10 minutes or until set.
These are great with a nice cold glass of milk! Enjoy.

My very first post...

I thought to start things off, I would post a picture of my favorite ceramics project. I was president of the ceramics club on base in Trenton, Ontario for 2 years and really enjoyed it. I had never done ceramics before joining the club and picked it up pretty quick I think. Anyway, this is a carousel horse that I made for my mom on Mother's Day 2006. She loves the antique carousel horses and really liked this one I made for her.
